Abstract Sunshine silk batik scarf, Designed by Monica Rao
Batik is a technique that was first developed in Java Indonesia using wax as a resist that is applied to the entire fabric. Then dye was applied and the areas where wax was present it created a resist. They built-up layers of wax and dyes several times until they achieved desired results. The traditional wax that was used was a mixture of parafin wax and bees wax. This tradition of creating beautifully patterned repetitive designs on cloth originated from Java Indonesia, but also appears in countries such as India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Philippines and Nigeria.
